About Us
What is the Circassian Benevolent Association and the Narts Dance Ensemble?
The Narts Dance Ensemble is part of the Circassian Benevolent Association in Wayne, New Jersey that is a nonprofit cultural organization founded in 1952. All of the members of the association and the dancers of the ensemble are known ethnically as Circassians in the world and among themselves are referred to as Adigha. Since its inception, the Circassian Benevolent Association has been dedicated to the preservation of the Adigha culture and heritage.
One of the mechanisms by which we are able to preserve and carry on our traditions and customs is through the art of Circassian folk dancing. The Narts Dance Ensemble for the past five decades has earned the regard and respect of its audience for its adherence to authenticity, sense of cultural community, and practice of ancient traditions & values.
The name of the ensemble “NARTS” is taken from the legendary and mythical heroes of the Circassians from centuries past, from our homeland Circassia, of the Northern Caucasus.
Through the years the dance ensemble has performed at major dance festivals locally, nationally, and internationally to standing ovations.
Today, Baturay Shaguj is the artistic director and head instructor of the Narts Dance Ensemble. The musical director is Murat Psiblane. The present ensemble is composed of over 150 dancers who range from 5 to over 50 years of age.
